Why Do So Many North American Fences Have a Gap at the Bottom?
If you’ve spent time in Canada or the U.S., you’ve probably noticed something kind of odd about a lot of backyard fences.
They don’t fully touch the ground.
Usually there’s a small gap underneath — sometimes just a few centimeters, sometimes a bit more.
For people who grew up in places where fences are built tight against the ground, this looks weird at first. It almost feels unfinished.

Wouldn’t animals get through?
Doesn’t it reduce privacy?
Why not just seal the whole thing completely?
But in North America, that little gap is actually intentional most of the time.
And honestly, it solves more problems than people think.
1. It Helps Water Drain Out
This is probably the biggest reason.
In many parts of Canada and the northern U.S., fences deal with:
- heavy rain
- melting snow
- wet soil

The bottom absorbs moisture first. Then mold, swelling, warping, and decay slowly follow.
A small gap allows water to pass through instead of getting trapped underneath.

2. Lawn Maintenance Becomes Much Easier
North American suburbs usually have grass on both sides of the fence.
That creates a practical problem.
If the fence touches the ground completely, mowing becomes annoying. Grass along the bottom edge turns into a hard-to-reach strip that constantly needs trimming by hand.
People don’t want to crawl around with scissors every weekend.
With a gap underneath, a mower or trimmer can slide slightly under the fence line and clean things up much faster.

3. Wood Expands and Shrinks Constantly
Outdoor fences move more than most people realize.
Wood reacts to humidity and temperature changes all year long.
Summer moisture makes boards expand a little.
Cold dry winters make them shrink again.

And once moisture gets trapped underneath, the bottom section of the fence often becomes the first area to fail.
This is why many contractors actually recommend avoiding direct ground contact whenever possible.
5. It Also Helps With Uneven Ground
A lot of yards in North America aren’t perfectly level.
Some slopes are small. Others are more noticeable.
Leaving a slight gap underneath the fence makes installation easier because the panels don’t need to perfectly match every bump in the terrain.
Trying to fully seal the bottom across uneven ground usually creates a mess visually anyway.
So most installers choose practicality over perfection.

6. Animals Surprisingly Aren’t Always the Main Problem
At first people assume:
“Wouldn’t animals just go underneath?”
Sometimes small animals do.
But oddly enough, fully enclosed fences can create their own issues too.
When the bottom sits tightly against the ground, animals sometimes dig underneath and create hidden tunnels or nesting spots.
An open gap is actually less attractive for some animals because there’s less cover and hiding space.
So the “sealed fence = better animal control” idea doesn’t always work as expected.
7. North American Fence Culture Is Different
There’s also a cultural side to this.
In many North American suburbs, fences are meant to create boundaries — not necessarily complete isolation.
People still value:
- openness
- visibility
- neighbor friendliness
A fence separates spaces without feeling too fortress-like.

The small gap underneath kind of reflects that design philosophy too.
That little space under North American fences isn’t usually bad workmanship.
Most of the time, it’s intentional.
It helps with:

So while it may look strange at first, the gap actually comes from years of practical experience with climate, materials, and everyday maintenance.
